Bio Oak Processionary Catterpillar Free (5 nests)

Nematodes for natural control against catterpillers

Nematodes are safe for birds and effective against the oak procesisonary catterpillar.

Oak processionary catterpillar
the catterpillars hatch in spring, around april/may. The catterpillars immediately start looking for oak leaves to feed on and form groups (nests) in which they spend the days. At night they leave these nests in order to feed. Around half may the catterpillars start to develop bristles which can be harmful to humans and animals. The bristles cause irritation, itching and red spots. The catterpillars can be a pest throughout the entire summer and cause several issues.

Control of oak processionary catterpillar with nematodes
Nematodes are tiny worms that can be found in the gound naturally. This species of nematodes can be used as control agent for the oak processionary catterpillar but is harmless for other animals. The nematodes need to be mixed with water after which they can be sprayed over the catterpillar nests. Once applied the nematodes will enter the catterpillars which makes them sick and causes them to stop eating. After a couple of days the catterpillars die. Birds can still feed on the catterpillars once infected and won't be harmed. Nematodes can best be applied in the evening. At this point there is less sunlight so the mixture won't dry as quick, which is beneficial.

Nematodes have a limited shelf life but can be stored for some weeks at 5-8 degrees celsius. See box for the exact expiration date.
